Google, Jio Offer Free Gemini AI to 400M Users

In a major push to democratize artificial intelligence across one of the world’s largest telecom markets, Google and Reliance Jio unveiled a strategic partnership offering free access to the Gemini Pro AI Plan for eligible Jio users in India. The 18-month subscription, launched on October 30, 2025, opens the gates to Google’s most advanced generative AI tools for millions of consumers, with potential global ripple effects across technology, productivity, and creative industries.

Google Bets on India’s 5G Wave with Pro-Level AI Access

The partnership forms part of Google’s most ambitious AI expansion strategy in an emerging market to date. Through its alliance with Reliance Intelligence, the artificial intelligence arm of India’s largest telecom operator Reliance Jio, Google is offering Gemini 2.5 Pro capabilities bundled into Jio’s 5G plans—at no additional cost. The move combines Google’s cutting-edge AI research advancements with Jio’s national footprint, encompassing over 400 million subscribers.

Excited to partner with Reliance Jio to bring the best of Google AI to India,” said Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, in an official statement. “Eligible Jio users will receive our AI Pro plan at no extra cost for 18 months, including Gemini 2.5 Pro, 2TB of storage, and our latest AI creation tools.”

What Jio Users Receive with Gemini Pro

The Gemini Pro offering is valued at ₹35,100 (or approximately $396 USD) over the promotional period. Users gain access to a comprehensive suite of artificial intelligence tools designed to enhance personal productivity, creativity, and research. Highlighted features include:

  • Gemini 2.5 Pro: Advanced multimodal AI model accessible via the Gemini app, supporting elevated reasoning and input analysis.
  • Image and Video Generation: Access to tools like Nano Banana and Veo 3.1, enabling consistent, real-time AI-generated video and images.
  • NotebookLM: AI research assistant offering up to 5x higher usage limits compared to free accounts.
  • 2TB of Cloud Storage: Allocation across Google Drive, Photos, Gmail, and Android-based WhatsApp backups.
  • Workspace Integration: Seamless Gemini integration with Gmail, Docs, and Slides, maintaining context across documents and tasks.

The plan is available to Jio prepaid subscribers on 5G Unlimited plans costing ₹349 ($3.94 USD) per month or above, as well as equivalent postpaid tiers. Eligible users can claim the offer via the MyJio app, streamlining the onboarding process into the Google ecosystem.

India’s Youth at the Center of AI Adoption

Google and Reliance Jio initially targeted users between 18 and 25 years old, a demographic considered crucial for early technology adoption. This group, increasingly reliant on digital tools for learning, content creation, and communication, stands to benefit significantly from direct access to powerful generative AI models without paywalls or hardware limitations.

Over time, the rollout will expand to include all eligible Jio users across India, transforming the country’s digital landscape through everyday AI enablement—from student research and smart presentations to automated content development and visual media generation.

Raising the Stakes in the AI Telecom Arena

This partnership follows mounting competition in the AI distribution space. In July 2025, competitor Perplexity inked a similar deal with Bharti Airtel, India’s second-largest telecom provider, to offer access to Perplexity Pro services to Airtel’s 360 million subscribers. However, Google’s collaboration with Jio extends to a broader user base and provides deeper ecosystem integration.

Backed by extensive 5G coverage and proven infrastructure readiness, Reliance Jio enables bandwidth-heavy AI features like real-time video generation and multimodal search. This network strength creates a strategic advantage for both companies as they aim to anchor AI usage into India’s digital routine.

Developer and Enterprise-Grade AI Expansion

While the primary focus is consumer AI access, the partnership also includes substantial enterprise and developer initiatives. Google and Reliance are introducing Gemini Enterprise, a secure AI environment tailored for business use. It allows Indian enterprises to develop, deploy, and manage custom AI agents for internal operations and customer-facing applications.

Support is enhanced through Reliance’s designation as a go-to-market partner for Google Cloud and the planned deployment of Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) in India. Together, these efforts aim to fortify India’s AI compute infrastructure while inviting a new generation of developers, startups, and enterprises to build on Gemini’s platform capabilities.

Scaling AI Across Cultural and Regional Lines

The partnership includes a focus on localizing AI experiences to reflect India’s vast linguistic and cultural diversity. According to the companies, upcoming integrations will feature regionally relevant content and interactions, supporting a more inclusive digital transformation.

This strategy aligns with Reliance Intelligence’s broader mission, formalized at Reliance Industries’ annual shareholder meeting in August, to promote “AI for All”. Complementing the Google alliance, Reliance also announced a separate ₹8.55 billion ($100 million USD) joint venture with Meta, indicating a growing race among tech giants to shape India’s AI trajectory.

A Template for Global AI Accessibility

With AI capabilities increasingly becoming a staple of digital life rather than a luxury, Google’s move with Reliance Jio offers a blueprint for scaling high-performance tools across the Global South. Just as mobile data transformed financial inclusion in emerging markets over the last decade, this model of AI partnership could catalyze a new chapter of educational access, creative empowerment, and entrepreneurial growth—powered not by silicon alone, but by synergy.
